BATTLES ON THE ISLAND AS DAMON WINS FOR HOMETOWN CROWD
The Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WORCS Series made its highly anticipated stop in Lake Havasu, Arizona, drawing elite off-road racers and dedicated fans for a thrilling weekend of competition. Known for its demanding conditions, the Havasu course pushed riders to their limits with deep sand, rugged terrain, and the iconic Lagoon Jump—one of the event’s most exciting and technical obstacles. With lap times as short as five and a half minutes, the high-intensity two-hour race delivered relentless action, testing endurance and skill as competitors battled for a win as series points heated up. Coming into this third round, with 2 of the three top-season competitors having a mechanical issue, the points are starting to tighten as Beau slashes the deficit behind leader Logan Huff to just 4 points. In Pro-Am, Gage Leaver looks to continue his early-season success after a pair of wins heading into this weekend’s action, and with Torey Matajcich still recovering from round 1, Layne Fryar builds on her perfect season as she puts her Yamaha machine on the top of the box.
The weather warmed on Sunday, and the breeze was minimal for a perfect day in Lake Havasu. Logan Huff launched off the start with an ideal holeshot, leading the pack through the opening lap with Travis Damon and Beau Baron close behind. By the second lap, Damon capitalized on an opportunity to pass Huff, quickly establishing a ten-second gap as he crossed the line. With clear air ahead, he laid down the race’s fastest lap at 5:32, setting the pace for the grueling battle ahead. Huff put up a strong defense against Baron, but on lap four, the veteran racer moved into second, setting his sights on Damon.

Meanwhile, Cole Fryar, running in third, struggled with lingering injuries from a crash during Saturday’s race in the rocky sections. The pain and lacerations to his lower back proved too much, forcing him to withdraw and record a DNF for the round. His misfortune opened the door for Layne Fryar, who took on double duty, racing in the Women’s Pro class on Saturday before lining up for the Pro main event on Sunday. As the race wore on, Damon extended his lead, executing a flawless performance over 15 grueling laps. After 90 minutes of relentless racing, he crossed the finish line with an impressive two-minute advantage over Baron, with Huff securing the final podium spot in third.

The Pro-Am class showcased some of the most intense racing of the weekend, with rising stars Gage Leaver, Daven Desilva, and Eduardo Rojas proving just how deep the field has become this season. Rojas, who made the trip from Mexico, faced an early setback when his race machine was held up at the border. Despite scrambling to secure another quad, he was at a disadvantage, unable to hit the Lagoon Jump—costing him crucial time on every lap. Points leader Leaver had his challenges initially, finding himself buried at the back of the pack while Desilva seized the early lead. However, once Leaver broke free from traffic, he was unstoppable. He clocked the race’s fastest time on the same lap and surged past Desilva to take control. From there, he never looked back, cruising to a commanding victory. Landen Johnson endured a weekend of heartbreak. He ran in podium position for over half the race before suffering a mechanical issue on lap ten that ended his race early. His misfortune allowed Rojas to move up and secure the final podium position, making the best of a tough weekend.

Layne Fryar continued her dominance in the 2024 WORCS season, leading from start to finish in the Women’s Pro class to extend her championship points lead. A strong performance solidified her status as the rider to beat, as she showcased speed and consistency on the demanding Havasu course. Donna Espensen returned to Lake Havasu for redemption after a brutal crash into a tree last season, ending her weekend early. She bounced back quickly, delivering a stellar performance to finish second, tying her year’s best result. Dakota Hibler rebounded from a tough outing in Round 2 at Taft, charging back onto the podium in third. The top five were Bailey Baron in fourth and Heidi Colman in fifth, both putting in solid performances to cap off another action-packed weekend in the WORCS Women’s Pro class.

Rocky Mountain ATV/MC would like to thank all the racers, volunteers, and staff for putting on another incredible race weekend. Your dedication and passion make this series what it is. We’ll see everyone in Marysville for the next round on April 11th-13th!
