TRAVIS DAMON CLINCHES FIRST ATV PRO TITLE IN HOMETOWN.
For the final round of the 2024 Rocky Mountain ATV/MC, Racers head to sunny Lake Havasu City, Arizona, to battle by the lake. It’s a short course compared to the others on the circuit but heralded as one of the most difficult due to the big rocks and small sections that don’t allow much relief. Braxton Grosse stays on fire as he dominates this course, separating early from the pack to take the win as Gage Leaver fights from the very back after a mishap on the start, and Torey Matajcich completes her perfect season after an Electric race in Womens Pro.

On Saturday, Torey Matajcich had her eyes set on a perfect season as Layne Fryar and others were looking to shake things up. Bailey Baron blasted off the start line, grabbing a holeshot, but within that first lap, was passed by Fryar and Matajcich to fall into third, where she stayed for most of the race. Matajcich put down her fastest lap on the second lap with a time of 6:32 as she pulled her lead to ten seconds over Fryar. The battle brewed lap after lap as Fryar reeled in Matajcich, slowly coming to a head as they finished lap six wheel to wheel with less than a second separating them. Fryar made a pass as time was coming to a close and held a lead as they headed onto the beach. Fryar and Matajcich both hit the lagoon jump lap after lap and after making the pass, Fryar jumped and broke an axle, losing a wheel and her chances at the first win of the season. As the dust settled, the podium stood with Matajcich finishing in 1st, Baron in 2nd, and Dakota Hibler landing in the third spot. Dakota Hibler had quite the weekend as she split duties from racing on Friday in Havasu to racing at six in the morning and making the immediate drive to race women’s pro in the afternoon on Saturday. Matajcich won the championship, and Layne Fryar secured her second position despite the final-round results. Baron and Donna Espensen finished the season tied in points at 159, but a higher overall Podiums gives Espensen 3rd place in the championship.

On Sunday, Pro and Pro-Am lined up with the Pro-Am championship locked up in Mesquite by Justin Semas. All the pressure was sent to the front row as Travis Damon came into the weekend looking to capture his first ATV Championship. Knowing he had almost enough to clinch the championship, he rode a smooth but fast race, prioritizing the championship over the win. Grosse was absolutely on rails as he pushed his quad to the max from start to finish, leading every lap of the race, which added up to quite a few laps with a time of just under 6 minutes per lap.

On top of that, Grosse managed to lap every rider in the Moto except for Damon, who finished in 2nd, almost 6 minutes behind Grosse. Damon finishes in 2nd, giving him his first ATV championship and holding off the all-time great Beau Baron and the young up-and-coming Grosse this year, as I’m sure the battles will only grow into next year. Logan Huff picked his way through the group from starting in the back in 5th to 3rd after making the pass on Baron early on in the race. Baron is still rehabbing a broken collarbone, which forced him to ease off a bit through the deeper sections of the course, but he was still putting down absolute heaters as he still had quite the gap behind the rest of the pack.

In Pro-Am, Gage Leaver had quite the final round as the green flag dropped a slight mechanical issue, which caused him to start a solid 15 seconds behind the rest of his field. He took off and began to move slowly through his competition. Leaver and Daven Desilva came into the weekend with just a few points separating for 2nd and third in the championship. Eduardo Rojas looked fantastic as he brought his quad to the finish line first physically, but a slight mistake with the back number plate missing caused him to be penalized and dropped him from first to second, giving just enough points to keep Leaver second in the championship. With Rojas falling back, Leaver was shot into 1st with three wins out of the last four rounds. Desilva finished in 3rd after passing Rylan Steadman for the last spot on the podium.
Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WORCS wants to thank all of the volunteers, racers, and track crew for another awesome weekend of racing in Lake Havasu. The banquet and award ceremony for the 2024 season will be held at Tuscany Suites and Casino on December 7th!
