BARON GETS BACK ON TOP AT GLEN HELEN RACEWAY

Racing is back at the famous Glen Helen Raceway for the 2nd installment of the Rocky Mountain ATV/MC WORCS Series. Weather played a significant role in this weekend’s race schedule, with persistent high winds throughout and preceding rainfall presenting numerous challenges. Beau Baron found himself back on top of the box in round two, with Wyatt Rock winning in Pro-Am and Torey Matajcich bringing home another victory in women’s Pro.

On Saturday, Women’s pro lined up with the class growing again this weekend as east coast GNCC Racer Hannah Hunter came out to battle with the best in the west. As the green flag dropped, Julyssa Pesqueira and Matajcich came into the Talladega side-by-side for the holeshot. Still, Matajcich came out on top after the dust settled as she pushed to create a gap between herself and her competitors. As the race progressed, Matajcich and Layne Fryar battled for the lead each lap; she cut the lead down to under ten seconds but could not reel her in by the finish. Behind the leaders in the back off-road section of the course, the riders faced a logjam, causing them to fall back, with some being stuck for as long as 5 minutes in the muddy chaos. After getting through the section, Hunter, riding on a machine loaned by Beau Baron, settled into third place, where she finished on the podium in her West Coast adventures.  Pesqueira and Bailey Baron rounded out the top five in the Women’s Pro class.

With Non-stop wind and gusts reaching the 30-40 mph range, Glen Helen had to make the hard decision to close the ridges for safety reasons, causing the WORCS crew to do some quick thinking to create some new parts of the course for the Pro and Pro-Am races on Sunday. The excitement began right from the start when, on the first lap, a barrier led to Braxton Grosse and Travis Damon crashing. Grosse could not complete the race due to the damage sustained, but fortunately, he’s alright and eagerly anticipates returning to compete in round 3. Baron narrowly avoided it and continued, but the chaos caused the rest of the Pro line to cut the course on the first lap, causing some confusion early on. Baron was on a tear throughout the race, watching him get faster and faster each lap, putting down the fastest lap of the day on his final lap with a time of 9:38. Damon and Baron made their way through the field, passing everyone again on the way to finish with Damon finishing just 19 seconds behind Baron pushing him into the lead with points after his one-two start of the season. All the way from Washington, Cody, and Kenny Sanford showed some brotherly love as they battled for the majority of the race. Cody passed him during lap six and made it stick to land on the podium in third, with Kenny landing in 4th place. Logan Huff was right behind them to finish in the top 5.

In one of the largest classes of the year, Pro-AM, with 16 riders lining up at the gate, we had some great racing! Justin Semas, our round one victor, started with remarkable intensity, establishing a 15-second lead over his rivals in the initial lap. Behind him, Eduardo Rojas and Wyatt Rock went to battle as they were just seconds apart for more than half the race. Semas held the lead until the second to last lap when the rookie Wyatt Rock made the pass and put down his hottest lap of the weekend with a time of 10:19 and won his first Pro-Am race of his career. Semas finished in 2nd, keeping him on the points with another great race. Rojas, who flies to every round from Mexico to compete in the WORCS championship, finished in the third spot just ahead of Mason Del Gatto.
