Casey Sims SXS Youth 800 Production Round 9, 2017 – Glen Helen Summer Festival Amateur Race Report

June 18, 2017- Devore, CA- I had a great time at Glen Helen Raceway last weekend racing at WORCS, round 9! I was able to get in a few practice laps the day before the race. My car was running great and the track was tons of fun, so I was pumped for race day!

Summer is definitely here! It was well over 100 degrees when we lined up to race on Saturday afternoon. My class was the fourth row to start and there were seven cars in my class. The rows ahead of us took off one by one with a full minute in between each rows start. As row three took off in front of us, I started my car and got ready to go. The flagger looked at his watch and I loaded up. As the flag flew, I hit the gas and took off! I got the hole shot and rounded the first turn around Talladega hill! I was able to stay in the lead, but the second place finisher was on my bumper and the rest of the pack was not far behind. I knew it was going to be a long, hot race, so I focused and settled in.

As I headed out on the first lap, I was running in front, but I knew I was going to have to drive hard and fast the entire race. The second place finisher stayed right behind me, and there was no room for error. I stayed with it and was able to get into a good rhythm. Every time I would make a little progress and gain a little bit more of a lead, the second place finisher would catch me and I’d have to try again to regain the cushion in between us. With each lap, I would encounter traffic in front of me and I had to pick my lines and move quickly so I didn’t slow down. For a full 40 minutes, we put in some serious work. I stayed on the gas with the second place finisher pushing me. It was a great race and in the end I was able to stay in the lead and crossed the finish line in 1st place!

Our race schedule lightens a little through the summer, so we will be doing prep work and testing on the car. In July, I am looking forward to racing at the DIRT series, round 6.
