Casey Sims SXS Youth 800 Production Round 7, 2017 – Sand Hollow Amateur Race Report

April 23, 2017- Hurricane, UT- We had a whirlwind trip to Utah and back for WORCS round 7. We headed out on Friday night and arrived at Sand Hollow State Park on Saturday morning. I went straight to the driver’s meeting and then unloaded my car to get it to tech. I was scheduled to race on Saturday afternoon and my class was the 3rd row to take off from the line. The Women’s class took off and then the 900’s. I loaded up and waited for the flag to fly.
We took off from the line and immediately, I knew this was going to be a tough race. Sand Hollow is just that…sand, sand, rocks, and more sand! I could feel a difference in my car and the way it was going to handle on the course. I was running in the top four and then was able to make a pass on the back side of the course. I stayed in 3rd as we closed out the first lap.
After coming through the timing chute, we headed up a huge hill and the third place finisher passed me moving me back to the 4th place position. I stayed close and again made a pass on the back side of the course. There were huge rocks to look out for and drop offs as we drove through the dunes. I was able to stay in 3rd until the last lap of the race, but then I took a different line in one section and hit a big rock. It jarred my car and almost flipped me over causing my car to shut off. I quickly turned it back on and took off again, but the delay allowed the 3rd place finisher to catch up and pass me. I drove hard and fast but couldn’t get to the checkers first. I finished the race in 4th place.
This race closed out a very busy month for the SIMS188 Racing team. We traveled nearly 2,500 miles over the last 4 weeks and raced every weekend. We are ready for a couple weeks off, and we plan to do some much needed maintenance on my car to gear up for round 4 at the DIRT Series and round 8 at the WORCS Series in May.
