David Haagsma Wins WORCS Season Opener

Peoria, AZ β The 2013 Rocky Mountain ATV MC WORCS Series presented by Motoworks and Dirtwheels season kicked off at Canyon MX in Peoria, Arizona, but unlike the picture perfect weather the motorcycle racers experienced the week earlier, rain moved in Friday evening and it rained all day Saturday with showers lingering into Sunday for the Pro ATV Main event, which meant for a muddy start to the season.
Maxxis / H&M Motorsportsβ David Haagsma was up to the challenge as he charged his Honda into the lead in the final laps to claim his first ever WORCS Pro ATV win with LMR / Exitβs Robbie Mitchell claiming the second spot on the Podium followed by Maxxis / H&M Motorsportsβ Beau Baron.
With well over an inch of rain falling on the track over the weekend, the majority of original track layout was under water, so the WORCS crew was forced to cut out most of the motocross track along with several miles of the off-road course. Even the start was covered in a thick layer of mud, so the WORCS crew scrapped off as much mud as possible before the 10:30 AM start.
With the starting gate buried in the mud, the start of the Pro Main was a dead engine start, and Pro Rookie, #116 Keith Johnson, would grab the holeshot, but he was quickly passed in turn two by Yamahaβs #417 Josh Row.
There were several lead changes early on in lap one, butΒ #5 Robbie Mitchell gained control of the lead by the end of the lap followed by Can-Amβs #49 Dillon Zimmerman and Row. Mitchell would maintain the lead for the first half of the race, but he wasnβt alone with Haagsma in hot pursuit. The pair would swap the lead after pits stop, but Mitchell would regain the lead once again, which he held till lap thirteen.
Sparks Racingβs Haagsma would take over the lead near the end of lap 13 when he was able to take the inside line on Mitchell to make the pass. Haagsma would maintain the lead for the final three laps to secure his first ever WORCS Pro ATV win with Mitchell finishing just 7 seconds behind Haagsma at the checkered flag.
Tire Blockβs Beau Baron would claim the final spot on the podium after an exciting battle early on for the third spot between Baron and Row. The pair would swap the third spot back and forth several times throughout the race, but amazingly, Baron would run his fastest lap times of the day in the final laps of the race and he recorded the fastest laptime of Pro Main in lap fourteen with a time of 6:29.113.
In lap 12, Yamahaβs #94 Dustin Nelson would catch and pass his teammate, Row, to take over the fourth spot, which he held to the checkered flag. Row would end the day rounding out the top five.
In the Pro Am Class, #842 D.J. Noerr would claim the win after getting off the line in the second spot, and he would take over the lead by the end of lap two. Noerr would take the win with over a minute spare on #32 Grant Mitchell. For Mitchell, it was his first Pro-Am podium, and he recorded the fastest pro-am laptime in lap eight. #53 Mike Sloan would charge his way from a near last place start to claim the final spot on the podium.
After a muddy start to the 2013 Rocky Mountain ATV MC WORCS Series presented by Motoworks and Dirtwheels, round 2 is just two weeks away in Primm, NV at Buffalo Billβs Casino and Resort on February 8-10th.
