WORCS Round 5 Pro ATV Race Report

Adelanto, CA – Round 5 of the WORCS Racing Series was held at Racetown 395, which is known to have one of the roughest off-road sections, and to make things even more challenging, racers were greeted to temps in the upper 90βs, which kept the water truck running non-stop on Sunday in an attempt to stay on top of the dust, but when the dust settled, it was Maxxis / H&M Motorsports claiming his second straight win followed by his teammate, David Haagsma, and Yamahaβs Dustin Nelson taking the final spot on the Podium.
Sparks Racingβs #549 Beau Baron grabbed the ATVriders.com Holeshot Award followed by #422 David Haagsma and #417 Josh Row.
Baronβs only challenge for the lead came early on the in the race by Haagsma with the pair entering the WORCS-X section together, but Baron opted for the quicker lagoon jump while Haagsma lost time climbing over a series of log obstacles. Baron wasnβt about to surrender the lead as he went on to record the fastest laptime of the race in lap two (8:44.169), which allowed him to build some breathing room as he went on to secure the win and take over the pro points lead.
Maxxisβ #422 David Haagsma was in a heated battle with Can-Amβs #2 Josh Frederick for several laps early in the race as the pair swapped the second spot back and forth, but Haagsma would catch a break in the eighth lap when Frederickβs would run out of gas after passing Haagsma, which allowed Haagsma to regain the second spot for his fourth podium finish of the season.
Yamahaβs #94 Dustin Nelson got off to an unusual mid-pack start, and after running in the seventh spot for the first half of the race, Nelson came on strong in the final laps to pass many of the racers beginning to become fatigued from the brutal conditions. When the checkered flag came out, Nelson secured the third spot for his second podium finish of the season.
The biggest upset of the weekend was Josh Frederick running out of fuel just a few hundred yards from his scheduled fuel stop, which had Frederick running to the pits on foot to grab some fuel, but thankfully, Rick Ellsworth offered an exhausted Frederick a ride back to his quad, which was a great act of sportsmanship. Frederick refueled, but he was only able to work his way back up to a ninth place, which now has Frederick nine points behind Baron in the pro points chase.
Round 6 of the 2012 WORCS Racing series is set for June 16th at a new location, On the Edge Raceway, in Southern Utah.
